Unified power quality conditioners abbreviated as U P Q C comprise combined series and shunt active power filters (A P F s). for synchronized compensation of current and voltage disturbances and reactive power. They are employed in power distribution systems. They are connected at the point of common coupling (P C C) of loads that produce harmonic currents.

The series active power filter has to compensate the disturbances at source voltage, i.e., harmonics, dips or over-voltages that might worsen the local load operation while the shunt active power filter attenuates the unwanted load current components (harmonic currents and the fundamental frequency component which contributes to the reactive load power). Furthermore, the shunt A P F should control the voltage at dc-bus to ensure the U P Q C compensation capability

These performances can be accomplished by employing diverse control techniques which can function in the time domain, in the frequency domain or both. Time domain functions, like p q or d q based methods, allow the fast compensation of time-variant disturbances however make more composite their selective compensation. In this scenario, frequency domain functions are more stretchy but their dynamical response is slower.
